ok, i've decided to sell off all my freshwater fish, and set-up two new brackish setups, the tanks are:
22x22x18
48x24x39
I'm also considering a 32x13x18high.

What species would be suitable in these size setups? I've heard about people keeping certain Lionfish in brackish but never looked into it, is it possible?

Thanks,John

All I can do is suggest some nice brackish fish to you
Scats
Monos
Bumblebee Gobys
Glassfish
Orange Chromide
Helfbeaks
Celebes Rainbowfish

All these fish are well worth considering :good:

:D thanks for the list.
Never knew Halfbeaks were Brackish!!

Definatley considering a group of Gobies in the 32" long tank, with a group of halfbeak, would make a nice setup i think, especially if i had a decent sized group of the Gobies, say 10, and a pair/trio of halfbeak.

I'm thinking scats, monos, and a group of Glassfish for the `48x24x30.
and then a group of Chromide in the 22x22x18

Lots of things to consider first, like where i can find any of them, i can get scats, mono's from my LFS, so thats not a problem, the rest may be though

i would not make all 3 tanks brackish, mainly because compared to freshwater, the current brackish available number of fish in the trade is quite small. Your selection may be limited. for a smaller tank, gobies, halfbeaks and rainbow fish(small ones like celebs and maybe furcata and anything too big for the gobies to eat) will be nice.

orange chromides work just fine with scats monos and archers, just beware of the chromides killing each other.

you can do species or predatory tanks with either bullrout, freshwater lionfish aka stonefish, freshwater(really brackish) moray eel, or puffers.

Only *some* halfbeaks are brackish water fish; so far as the traded species go, primarily the small wrestling halfbeaks, Dermogenys pusilla. Celebes halfbeaks, Nomorhamphus spp., are mostly from freshwater habitats. They will tolerate very slightly brackish water, 2-3 grammes/litre, but they really want soft to moderately hard, around neutral water conditions.

Take care when mixing different brackish water species. Not all require the same salinity. Scats and monos, for example, will do best between SG 1.005 to 1.025, but that would be too salty for plants. If you were wanting to keep BBGs, knight gobies, orange chromides, halfbeaks, figure-8 puffers or glassfish, then a lower salinity would be better, maybe SG 1.003, because that'd allow you to grow a wide range of plants.

Do also review the numerous salt-tolerant freshwater fish such as Hoplosternum littorale and Melanotaenia boesemani -- these will thrive at SG 1.002-1.003, and as such would be useful additions to low-salinity systems where things like mollies and knight gobies were being kept.

Cheers, Neale

Hmmm, That gives me a lot to think about,i have a group of Bosemani rainbows and a similar (shaped) species (Melanotaenia Australis)
Not my fish but same species.

hmm, another good idea.
Bullrout look very interesting, thanks for the reply.
Any ideas on plecs or they completley salt intolerant?

There are some Hypostomus species that occur in slightly brackish water, but they are not traded.

Common plecs, Pterygoplichthys pardalis, will tolerate slightly brackish water, and do so in the canals of Florida, but whether it's good for them I cannot say. I'd not keep them above SG 1.002, to be honest, and would always choose a true brackish water catfish, like Aspredo, Sciades, Plotosus, Mystus gulio, or to some extent Hoplosternum littorale if looking for a brackish water catfish.

Cheers, Neale
