1) I was just reading through previous topics and I noticed people arn't too fond of the test strip kits. What are the recommended test products?

2) I have 2 goldfish and 3 tiger barbs I'm using to cycle a 30 gallon. I just noticed one of the goldfish has was looks like a gash in his side. I'm a little worried that this is a sign of disease? Should I let it ride out or should I do something with that fish?

Thanks for your help...

1) The problems with test strips are: they are not very accurate, they can be corrupted over time by moisture in the air, and they actually cost more in the long run than liquid tests. There are several different test kit brands, but API Master Test Kit is quite affordable and covers all the basics.

2) Tiger barbs can be very nippy fish. When your tank is eventually cycled you should plan on having at least 6 tiger barbs to help them spread the aggression out amongst themselves. Otherwise the weakest may be harassed to death until you only have one tiger barb left. Fleeing a barb and thus scraping on something may have caused the injury to the gold fish, or it could have been another injury or disease. If you haven't been told already, goldfish should not really be kept in tanks with tropical fish for multiple reasons. Goldfish are temperate water fish, extremely heavy waste producers, and have different dietary needs than tropical fish are just a few examples.

Good info again - thanks. I have an 8-gallon tank in storage --- I'll use that for the goldfish.

There is so much info out there... it's hard to know what to do when you are starting. I had people recommend goldfish to start a tank but the more I read and talk to people, it looks like a big no-no. I'm also intimidated about all of the chemicals you have to test for.

Having a blast though! Just don't want to kill and fish needlessly if I don't have to.
