Hi, I've found Platys listed as Xiphophorus Maculatus and also Xiphophorus Varuatus. Can someone tell me the difference? I wanna make sure I get the right one!

As far as I know, maculatus are tropical and variatus are classed as subtropical.

Ah ok, so I need to make sure I have the first one. Thanks! :)

Their both found through out Mexico and are classed as subtropical.

However in the hobby plates are a cross of both maculatus and varuatus, as well as the Swordtail (X. helleri)

If you buying shop fish then things are not a problem to worry about as long as there in above 66f or 18c they will be fine. However don't go to high so keep it under 78f

Am I right in thinking that variatus have more pronounced scales than normal maculatus?

Easiest way is to look at the dorsal and count the rays.

X. maculatus have around 9 fin rays

X. variatus will be more at 11 or so.

However it's all pointless if your looking at shop fish as their all cross breeds.
