I received a 2.5 gallon tank from my younger sister to take to college with me so I could keep fish there with me. I know i can only keep one or two fish, any suggestions on how to start this tank and which fish to pick for my tank.

A tank that size is really only suitable for a single betta. Other fish small enough for the tank, such as tetras, prefer to be in groups in numbers to large for your tank. Another option would be some ghost shrimp. You could keep a decent number of those in a 2.5 gallon and in my opinion they are fun to watch.

You could try shrimp! They're great fun to watch and really easy to care for. Most eat just about anything and tolerate a range of temperatures.

does it have afilter heater etc. Personally i would go for a betta

The tank does not come with a filter ( in all honesty is a worthless tank. I would never use this type of tank at home. I enjoy fish though and want to have some in my dorm room.) It has a air stone than basically covers the whole bottom of the tank and one worthless plastic tree which i may ditch for 2 or tree small live plants.

In 2.5 gallon tank I really think your restricted to either a pair of bettas or a pair of honey gourami but with no filter you would have to carry out a minimum water change of 50% every day. Its not so much a nano tank more a pico tank... a single betta splendes male with some amano shrimp or cherry shrimp would be fine, but you must make sure to keep on yop of water quality.
