me and my partner are thinking of filling our 160 litre completely with gorgeous guppies! there are a couple of questions though. complete male tank or female/male? i know about lots and lots of babies but we would let nature take its course with them , would it be silly though to have female/males or much safer males? also i read on one resource theyneed salt - is this true? i know mollies need salt but are guppies much the same for better life quality and is it aquarium salt? (not stuff for marines :))

lastly for purely guppies and perhaps small shoal of khulis, how many guppies for the tank in entierty? p.s. it is 160 litres after consideration of sand etc :) thanks!

If you buy good quality guppies then your not have any problems, newly imported fish tend to suffer at first but soon settle down.
Buying from a breeder would be best to be honest.

If you want to breed them then you want to aim for a ratio to 2 females to each male so the males don't harass them to much.

Of if you want just males thats fine, and in 160l that would look great :)

Sand substrate would look great and khulis would be a good mix, but dont add salt it's not needed.

You need more females than males, the more females the better.

Thanks Helter!

We can't decide between all male and male/female tank. We're mostly after visual impact so perhaps all male might be better?? Although male/female would replenish itself.

It depends on how many kids u want :)
with just guppies you can rear the fry with the parents like i do.

I would do that, perhaps have a breeder trap etc,. How many guppies in total do you reckon for the capacity without breeding involved? How many if went for mixed ratio? I am vearing towards males at the moment :)

If you started with 10 females and several males then your soon and a self sustaining population.

160l is just over 40 gallons so with good filtration you could have 40+ adult guppies if you wanted to push it.

Hmmm that sounds a interesting idea, make our own guppy community. Would there be really bad problems with inbreeding down the line? Likelihood of culling or survival of the fittest an such? Ohhh quite tempted by that a little. I think I need to read up on the pregnancy side now..

p.s. thanks guppy guru ;)

No problems, you may get the odd runt but remove it ASAP and while small a betta would have it as a snack ;) lol

If you dont breed from runts then your be fine
