what does bump mean?

When someone has a thread that hasn't been replied to for a long time and is going extinct, they type "Bump" to bring it back to the top of the first page so people will look at it again .

its common sense rearly, if you have a topic and no body replies then you bump it back to the top of the page so more people will see it and theres more chance of an answer from another member

im slightly confused by that. bumping is a rather rare occurence on this forum ime. its either bumping up your question or starting a whole new topic with the same question , which is a waste of webspace
