Hi there

I have a three month old 15 US gallon tank currently home to 10 neon tetras, 5 platies and a cory julii ( or maybe trillneatus from what I have read elsewhere on this site). The cory is a sole survivor of two pairs of two (I know know about fishless cycling and will not cycle with fish again).

I think the cory needs a friend or two or three - do they also need to be julii/trillneatus? I have a 60 US gallon tank (cycled) currently home to 6 golden barbs - should I move him and some new friends in there and find a different group of corys for the smaller tank?

Many thanks

They don't NEED to be the same species - but they'd much prefer it to be. I'd get at least two more jullis (more if you've got the space) because they really do love being amongst their own kind. I've got both pandas and jullis and though they'll often ignore each other completely or shoal with the whole lot of them, you can generally find them with their own kind and they like to sleep in a pile of their own species :)

With the 'neon' your are already over stocked. Neon Tetras grow up to be 2" (5cm) and your tank is a 15 gallon, so lets to some math to explain how you are overstocked. You have 10 neon that grow up to be 2" so 2" x 10 = 20.

Well although it would be great for him to have more of a group with the tank he's in, I don't think you can put anymore fish in that 15gallon tank. As long as the fish that are in the 60gallon won't pick on the Juli that would work. But you do need to make sure that the catfish can make it up to the top for air. Sometimes tanks can be to high, and it is all to high for the cory to travel and they can't get enough air. So be sure there is plenty of areation too.

Thanks for the comments - I'd been working to a stocking level of 1 inch per 12 square inches of surface area - i.e 24 inches in a 1 foot by 2 foot tank but had underestimated the size the neons would grow to. I'll do some thinking as to which group to move to the bigger tank.

Cardinals grow to 2", Neons usually stop at between 1" - 1.5"
