i have a 15 gallon tank that has just cycled, 24x12x12. the stocking scheme i would like is:
- 1 african butterfly fish
- 5-6 cories
- 4-6 african dwarf frogs

Definitely get African Dwarf Frogs they have so much character but they do like to hide so make sure you have lots of plants. Also don't know whether you know about them or not but I made the mistake of listening to my LFS who told me I could feed them fish food or dried food... they don't eat it!!!

Only frozen or live foods.... that sink!!

will the butterfly fish eat the frogs?

It might get territorial towards them. My adfs used to like to stay at the surface, and with a small tank like yours, the ABF might get a bit defensive. I would forget about the ABF. :good:

I would also forget about the African Butterfly Fish. Corydoras are the perfect fish for a smaller tank. That being said it would seem your tank is "bottom heavy", if you know what I mean. You have an awful lot going on at the bottom but nothing at the surface (If you eliminate the ABF). A more peaceful topwater fish that can be on his own in a smaller tank would actually be a betta. I've had excellent experience with a betta and several corydoras. That being said I know almost nothing about African Dwarf Frogs.

As I said, a betta makes a surprisingly good community fish, especially with corydoras. That's personally my suggestion for several reason. You can often find a very attractive betta for little money. It will help to fill out the upper water portion of your tank due to them being top dwellers. Another positive is as far as the species goes, they are loners, so then you won't have to worry about getting several of them for them to be happy...then you don't have to worry about overstocking.

So get the African Butterfly Fish but don't get the frogs maybe. That seems to be the main concern that has been brought up. I personally don't have any hands on experience with either species.

my frogs rarely went to the surface....only to get air and right back down to the substrate.

I don't think you'll have a problem as long as the ABF isn't a totaly maniac....as I don't know anything about them.

But you do have to target feed ADFs as they can't find food on their own....they are blind as bats. Mine did eat flake food when I target fed them but it took a little convincing. I fed them freeze dried bloodworms until I got them turned onto the flakes.

I agree that would be a bottom heavy tank. Why not just get a couple of frogs?
