I use to keep goldfish in my younger days and since then I have only been keeping bettas and a livebearer tank. I would like to set up a tank for a goldy I had a spare 15gal tank lying around and I was wondering if this could house some type of goldie if so what type? I was also wondering if I put a snail in the tank if that would help wastes if not no big deal. I also would like to know if goldfish like oranges? I always see orange slices at my petstores. I got a filter on it that is double the capacity of the tank and I can do water changes as often as I need to any help would be great thanks.

Its great to see someone doing the research before they get the fish rather than after.
anyway, for your size tank you can get a fantail type bodied goldie. you would need to go to the pet store to see which one you liked but there are loads of different types and colours to choose from. You should only get one though, and it wont be lonely. But if you do decide to get two then you will need to upgrade in a few months to at least a 20 gallon.
test kits for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph are essential too as goldies are really big poo machines.
i would also suggest a heater to keep the water from getting too cold. fantail types dont really do as well as the single tailed types in cold water.

hope some of that helped and i'm sure others will be along to offer help too

oh, as they are more prone to swimbladder problems then you should get sinking food for your fish and oranges in small bits once a week is enough. they also enjoy boiled squashed peas, lettuce, cooked rice, bits of cucumber and courgette to name a few.

snails will eat any uneaten food i think and algae but it depends on the type of snail you want. hope someone can help more with that.

Ok sounds good
I might be going check out the goldies at my petstore today I still don't know what kind I am gonna get tho it will be tough to decide.

good luck with the choices. be careful about delicate ones such as bubble eyes as they need empty tanks.

better edit this to say empty of ornaments and not water. :)

hehe I use to have a bubble eyes when I had a tank when I was younger they were so cool looking. I won't be getting one tho I was thinking of a lion head or an oranda of some kind. If I did get a bubble eyes all I have in there is a little bog wood that sticks up but I could take that out if I saw one at the store that I just couldn't resist and sometimes I am like that!

Ok I got two yes I know tank is too small but they are little and when they grow I will have a bigger tank set up for them. They are two orandas one is orange and white and the other is a calico:black, white, and orange.

I just knew you would get 2 :p

as long as youre prepare to do the extra work with them and upgrade in less than 6 months then you should do ok for now with them.
they sound really nice, any chance of pics?

I'm glad you got two, I think its mean to keep a goldy by itself. My 5 goldies in my 50 gallon are constanly interacting with each other, they swim together, eat together, and I guess poop together, LoL. I don't think they would be having much fun if they were by themselves. Think of it this way, a lone neon tetra CAN survive on its own, but it will thrive with buddies, and generally be healthier. And as long as your upgrading in the future, it should work out :)

I will try to get pics but will be hard. I just have one question tho are they suppose to nip each other? Because when I gave them a little food one kinda gave the other a kissing motion? Lol only way I can describe it.

Yeah when I went up there I looked at one I had to have and I said I want that one and the guy said is that it? and I saw one in the corner of my eye that I didn't notice until he swam down a little and I said him too. And then I tought to myself crap I just bought two goldfish! That's ok tho cause I have a 20gal I will break out when they get bigger.

nipping/nudging each other is common, just keep an eye out for any torn fins. they should settle down in a few days.

My goldfish do that all the time, when feeding. I think they nudge each other to try and get the other fish to spit out there food.

Be prepared to get a 4ft tank for them. I started off with 2 fancies in a 2ft tank around 2 years ago. 8 months ago I moved them to a 3ft and they've nearly outgrown that already.

Goldfish are very messy and I would always go for a bigger size filter then recomemded by the manufactures.

E.g. get a fluval 3 for a 2ft tank.

I agree totally with the bigger filtration ingo_1978 and as a guide try to get at least 10x the capacity of the tank. :)
