Hi Scottie,

It sounds like something interfered with your cycle and killed some of your beneficial bacteria. Did you test for ammonia too? Perhaps you forgot to add dechlorinator, or it could be that your water company has added more chlorine than usual.

It's also possible that a foreign substance, such as a cleaning product or room deodorizer got into the tank.

If this is the case, about all you can do is to continue doing water changes until the chemicals get back down. Then you will have to recycle it with the fish in it.

Please let me know how things go for you.

OK so all i do is keep doing water changes?

so there arent any chemicals for lowering nitrites??

ok good so ill will just keep doing wateer changes

thanks u so much

Hi Scottie :)

Yes, there are products that can remove chemicals from the water, but I don't recommend using them. Water changes will work as well and will remove excess waste and possibly harmful bacteria as well.

Did your platys make it through? Please remember that while you are rebuilding your population of beneficial bacteria, you are also caring for a tank of fish who might have had their immune systems compromised by this situation. The most helpful thing you can do for them is to keep up good and regular water changes until the cycle is completed. This will take a while, but it will be worth it. If you try to hurry it, the additional stress could cause the fish to become sick.

If you have another tank, or know someone who could spare some used filter media, you will be able to safely hasten the cycling process by adding some to your tank.

Yup I've used those nitrite lowering chemicals before, wasn't v impressed, just keep doing daily small (ish) water changes and keep your fingers crossed!

Another platy died

so i will just keep on doing 25% water changes daily

all of the other fish are looking fine

thank you
