Mine grows low and tight like that, too, but it isn't quite so red. I'm letting it send out surface leaves because I want that part of my tank shaded for anubias, so it probably won't stay like that for long. Either way, it decided to just do that naturally and would probably stay like that if I kept pinching off the ones that shoot to the top. I think it may have to do with the amount of lighting. I'm at 1.2wpg in my 55 US gallon that has the lily.

If you have one and it is sending out leaves to the surface and you don't want them, just pinch them off before they get all the way to the top. I've heard it'll quit trying eventually.
