The tank my friend gave me is 60x30x36, I make that 14 gallons (UK).

Not big enough for some of my more ambitious stocking plans but she does tell me she used to keep angelfish in it

Options being considered so far are:

1. Move the existing livebearers over and possibly add a few more. Either sell off the smaller tank or keep a betta in it.

2. Leave the existing fish as they are, and doing something totally different with the new tank. Bearing in mind the new one will be in my lounge where I can watch the fish in the evening, I want something restful to look at. I was wondering about making the new tank quite heavily planted, and keeping a big shoal of tetras (probably not neons, something less common), with maybe an open space at the front for a group of cories.

3. As above, leave the existing fish as they are, but keep the new tank as a species tank for a group of gouramis such as pearl or honey ones. Again possibility of some cories at the bottom or a bn plec.

Any other ideas? After doubting myself earlier, I've now decided to go for it and try to make something special out of what is presently a rather dirty old tank.

I would say go with your second idea. Or another type of schooling fish like danios (there are many different types) They are always running around chasing each other. Your tank may be a bit small for that though usually a 20 long is best. Planted tanks are always nice though!! That would be a good challenging start with plants!

Good luck!

Thanks for that. I think this is the route I'm going down, although it might be cherry barbs as well as or instead of tetras.

Today I bought a cabinet for the tank I was given (£35 from Maidenhead Aquatics - bargain!), cleaned up the tank, bought fine gravel, a heater and a filter, so when I next have a free day I can wash the gravel and start getting set up :)

The heater is 100w, which might actually be too powerful (hope not).

The filter is an interpet PF2 internal power filter, which seems to be slightly better quality than the fluval 1 on the other tank.

Can't wait to get started with the planting B)

I like idea 2,
Planted tanks with driftwood, rocks etc always look awesome! Aquascaping is always fun too.

For idea 2 i would also add about 15 cherry shrimp, they are awesome little kritters.
For schooling fish u could also looking to rasboras (eg galaxy rasboras) i know there are also smaller rainbow fish species, and Normans' Lampeye would also look awesome.
