It's too small - although they stay near their shells they are colony fish & the tank would be too small to keep stable parameters or to allow fish to establish seperate territories.
 
I agree with the above, 10 gallons is really the minimum even for these little fish. In a 4 gallon tank there really are few options of fish, and none for cichlids.
 
This post will make THREE that all say the same thing....TOO SMALL!

4 gallons is nothing better then a quarentine tank and even then it's too small.

you know what i'd do with it... go find a couple golden apple snails and raise them, they get huge (golf ball size)

their a really cool critter to watch & feed.

I hand feed mine all the time,

Lol - grossed out doesn't quite cut it :p Seriously though, a tank that size isn't realy easy to find fish for but you can get all sorts of interesting shrimp species that would work. For example, cherry shrimp or tiger shrimp in a planted tank can look very nice and are even entertaining to watch and breed. Take a look at this site: http://www.petshrimp.com/

Sorry for grossing you guys out. It's not that bad, actually. The dish is pretty much a poor man's version of Escargot. Don't knock it til you try it :hey:
