Hi,

I have purchased an established 120 litre tank with a mated pair of maroon clown fish. The female is about 4" and the male about 2".

It's an open top tank, but I could easily get a drip tray to fit it if necessary. Having said that, the people I've bought the tank off have had th e clowns for some time and say the fish have not attempted suicide.

The tank is about 26" long, 15" wide and about 18" tall with a twin t5 overtank luminere, skimmer, heater and filter.

I'll be moving tank, rocks, water, sand, and fish on Saturday and then setting it up again.

Question - can anything else go into the tank?

What about a cleaner shrimp and perhaps a hermit crab? Any other inverts that you guys recommend?

Can any other fish go into the tank? If so , what do you recommend? If the tank has some additional stocking capacity (I'll keep on top of reasonable sized weekly water changes) can any other fish go into the tank?

Perhaps a psuedochromis,or a royal gramma? bi-color or flame angel?

I like fire fish and jaw fish, but hear they are known "jumpers."

The next question, if there is more capacity (there may not be!), then how would I put new fish into teh tank? I hear the maroon clownfish (particularly the 4" female) can be quite agressive to new fish and should be added last. But I'd be setting the tank up with them in it. Hm.

Any advice is appreciated. If it turns out that the tank is only good for the maroons, then so be it as they look wonderful. But 1 or two other fish and some inverts would be nice.

maroon clowns shouldnt even be in that tank. They are way too big and aggressive when adult to share a tank of that size with anything else.

The good news for you is that maroon clowns if a proven maited pair could probably fetch you £50-£60 maybe. I would sell them on and buy a pair of common clowns and then you would be able to keep other fish too.

I know a bloke who got rid of two maroons from a 6 foot tank because they were just bullying everything

Hi,

Thanks for that. They seem fairly well behaved right now, so I'll keep the on their own for the time being, and if it becomes apparent that they need a bigger tank, I'll rehome and go with original plan of say 4-5 small fish.

Do you think they'll kill a medium sized cleaner shrimp?

i wouldnt have thought they would attack shrimp no. They may do if they are preparing a nest/ protecting eggs.

That's a great help, thanks. The tank I am buying is covered in algae, probably because the previous owner was using dechlorinated tap water. I plan to use RO.

I'm also investigating the best option for clearing all the algae and it seems some turbo snails and perhaps a hermit or mitrax crab woudl be the best option. Would these co-exist happily with the clowns too?
