11 Neon Tetra

i have recently increased my numbers of neons from 6 to 11.. they used to be quite happy as 6 but thought increasing their numbers would make them more active and explore / come out a little more. Seems to have done the opposite, now all 11 seem to huddle under the plants at the back of the tank like they have setup their own little territory... does it take some time for new ones to "bond" with the older ones? the older ones are obviously bigger in size, but thats not stopped the new ones from hanging around with them... just wondering if ill ever get them all out in the open together without getting abot 20 of them which im sure i dont have room for

Have you tested the tank for ammonia, nitrites & nitrates? If the tank is not very big or was already very stocked, adding the 5 new neons at once may have caused an ammonia spike which is causing their odd behaviour. How many gallons is the tank and what is its current stocking? Are the Neons showing any other symptoms like paleness or rapid or laboured breathing?

no, not acting strange at all. The levels are
PH 7.5, nitrite 0 ammonia 0 nitrate 10 tested today with api mater kit. its just over year old established tank, 120L, the stocking is in my sig...

the 5 new guys have been in since Monday so their 3rd day. previous to this they were in a smaller quarantine tank for 3 days.
they seem ok in them selves just thought they would be more active with more of their own kind.... as we speak they have moved more to the front of the plant line... maybe they are just getting used to the new ones?

Yeah i think they just need more time to settle in- some fish don't settle down properly for up to 2 weeks, so i would just give them some more time yet and keep an eye out for any strange symptoms etc (some fish diseases/parasites can take up to 2-3 weeks to show too). (adding some more planting to the tank may help them feel safer & more at home too )

cheers, will keep a close eye on them, they are camped in the vallisneria patch, which is plenty buig enough, just makes difficult to see all of them

Nice natural tank, yeah the stocking seems fine.

Neons are funny little fish tbh although i have 11 in my rio 300 and they are everywhere, they dont even school that tightly lol

Maybe try feeding more frequently (smaller amounts) and they might come out a bit moren if they think food is available

Mine don't school at night but any other time they are close together well except when I first got them where they were 3 shoals of 4 or in pairs but that was the first week
