ummm any kind of fish but only one

some fish that is cool

expensive

Maybe some endler's livebearer? Only do this if you want to raise many fry. Also keep them clear of guppies :)

Edit : oops, somehow I missed that you only wanted 1...

I think your best bet for a small tank, lone fish, is a betta.

You could do one dwarf puffer fish. (Just make sure you're actually getting a dwarf puffer ... not a green spotted, or another one that's technically brackish.) It would do fine in a 10 gallon tank alone. Do some research though, because they do have a lot of specific needs (tank must be fully cycled before they're added, needs specific live foods, etc.) They're a little more work than some fish ... but definiately fun and unique too! (I wish I could find one at the LFS around here!)

Arowana? They grow to be about 90cm... about 3 ft. Much much too big for a 10 gal. I hope you're trolling and not serious....

whoa whoa buddy thats alot of false info rite there, do u realize how big an arrowana gets? 10G is wayyyy to small, you could MAYBE get away with an african cichlid or two

I dont think cichlids would do well either... unless there is some exotic dwarf cichlid that likes solitude that I am unaware of...

A betta, or if you're into something more exotic the dwarf puffer idea sounds promising.

I've also heard of lone paradise fish.

Maybe a killifish pair?

Hm then that sounds like an alright idea. I don't know much about africans though.

a 10 gallon is hard to stock. I'd say this is a common question... perhaps someone should write a small tank guide and make it a sticky? :hyper:

I think that's a very good idea, because a lot of people begin their hobby with a basic 10-gallon setup (or "kit").

Maybe we could come up with a few different "scenarios" for communities that will work in a 10 gallon? (ie. all compatible fish, all appropriate for that size of tank) Something like:
Tank Setup #1 - 1 Betta fish + 3 corys
Tank Setup #2 - 3 guppies OR 3 platys or 3 endlers
Tank Setup #3 - etc etc.

(Those are just examples -- don't get hung up on my numbers/types, I just wanted to give an example of what I meant.)

But I'll leave it to those more knowlegeable than me... :)

Won't one fish get lonely apart from a male betta???
single dwarf gourami would work as well. As would a dwarf puffer, a sailfin molly, or may be even a crab.
