Any ideas for a 10g? I want to get rid of my guppies that are currently housed in it because it is too much work to keep the water hard enough for them. So soft water species only.
I would prefer to keep the cost of fully stocking it under $30
Maybe some cherry shrimp with something else?

I keep kubotai rasboras, sparkling gourami, and corydoras pygmaeus in my 10. Great nanos.

Could easily swap the cories for shrimp in your case if you wanted to keep it as an asian biotope.

But of my schoolers, the kubotais are my favourite. Excellent little nano fish and very hardy i find. Id recommend any of the microrasboras (kubotai, chili, emerald, boraras, etc)

If I were to do an Asian biotope would you suggest any specific plants to go along with it? Preferably ones easy to keep

Id go with crypts, java ferns, and maybe hornwort (its cosmopolitan)

Bucephalandra, Homalomena Sekadau South, moss, water wisteria, and water sprite would be other good beginner plants.

Oooooh what about killifish?

@Colin_T how many licorice gourami could I do?

Ok. that is to be expected at least a little. Do you think they would eat the shrimp young more than other fish?
They may eat shrimplets.

Probably. If they're been fed properly, then they may leave shrimplets alone. Again, this isn't guaranteed.
