10g Community Tank? Possable Or Not?

thats the size of my communty ^_^ . in mine, i have four dwarf gouramis, three king cobra guppies, three glowlight tetras, two neon tetras, two pygmy corys and a ghost shrimp. t'is a wee bit overstocked though...

cool how much did that all cost you?roughly i was thinking of acctualy turning my 10g tank into a community i was just wondering if it was big enough, the only problem is i dont have florecint lighting  so that might cut out the chances of getting real plants i am on a very very limmited buget! that is the reason i can not afford a larger tank!

A school of 6 small tetras/rasboras and 6 corydoras would be nice for a 10g.

You can use a screw-in compact fluorescent if you have one of those incandescent hoods. I think they run around $10 each.

well is there a larger selection l like really colourful fish that would realy liven up my fish tank like guppies, sorts of fish like that. and i was told by a freind that kilifish would go well in a 10g community tank but i dont beleive him can someone conferm this?

well, my friend gave me the tank for christmas, he wanted someone to share the same hobby as he did so that didn't cost me anything. the plants we ordered offline for a bit and i paid him $10 because he wouldn't tell me how much and he said to split shipping it would be $7 something. not so sure about the fish. all in all, with the two or three deaths and replacements i've had, i'd say close to $30 or $40? that's proabably a little steep. (all in USD)

cool deal, ill se what i can do with what i got hopefully i can get some nice colourful fish for my aquarium! also i love the idea of the dwarf gourami. i will probably go and see if i can get one. i am going to go and buy some more fish tomarrow. i just got rid of my 2 giant danio's and my leperd pleco. i will probably get some guppies a dwarf gourami and some corys and that should be about it! thanks for the help! and if any one has more sugestions please feel free to tell me!

There are certainly killifish that would do well here, but they are not all community fish, so it would be worth asking in the oddballs forum.

Suitable community dwellers for a tank this size would include:
guppies, endlers (but not so they can interbreed with guppies), corydoras hastatus/habrosus or pygmaeus, sparkling gourami, honey gourami, heterandria formosa (if tank mates are small and peaceful), shrimps, cherry barbs, small tetras.

I would steer away from the dwarf gouramis as they often carry disease.

Why not go for a guppy only tank.

There are so many different colours you can get, and it is an interesting breeding project.

When they breed you can save a few to give to friends or people to collect, even charge small amounts. (leaving the rest to be food for the mature guppies.

Alternatively you can save them all and try to get rid of them, but this way would leave you with hundreds after a year.

I personally have mollies, and just put 5 - 10 fry in the breding net and leave the rest to fend for theirselves, then give the fry away when they are 6-8 weeks. Gets brownie points on the forums.

I know that if I saved all the fry I would be left with some, so this is why I leave the majority in the tank.

U can have some platies and guppies. Or u can have a betta fish with some ottos, or some tetras.

Honey's and sparkling are actually some of the smallest gouramis you can get. I would pick those over the dwarfs, since most people like keeping only one to such a small tank to make sure there is no fighting between them. From what I understand, the dwarf gouramis sold in lfs are for the most part, males, and male dwarf gouramis tend to have territory issues in tanks that small.

I've never had sparkling gouramis myself, but I hear nothing but good things about them. Very attractive, active fish.

I'd advise against platys for ten gallon. In my experience with them, they always seemed more active and happier when I had a nice group of them (four or five females to one male). I use to have two female platys in my community ten gallon, and they just never seemed as active as the group in my 65 gallon community.

I HIGHLY recommend the corydoras hastatus/habrosus or pygmaeus. Very cute, active fish. There are also some very small rasbora (I can't remember the name right now), but I've heard many people speak highly of these as well.

Honestly, you probably want to stick with fish that stay around an inch. I think this allows you to stock a few more fish than if you went with something like mollies (which, reallly, can get up to four or five inches -some more)

i have an invertebrate community tank in a 10 gal. ghost shrimp, freshwater flat clams, one baby mussel, ramshorn snails, a few trumpet snails, and pond snails. i only have like 2-3 trumpet snails due to a big problem with the old snail tank. all the snails i have now came from like 3 or 4 different snails of each type. so they almost all have the same parents for each species. it's amazing how 3-4 snails can have hundreds of babies over time.

anyway, you would have to have small fish. like small algae eaters (not plecs), dwarf fish, guppies, maby corys, tetras and so on.

DON"T get rosies (a type of feeder goldfish). i had just 1 and my guppies fins were all torn up -_- but there betta now.
