Hi all, i recently did a 25% water change on Saturday 18 at 9pm because my fish were flicking on plants and stones and just wondering if i should do another water change today (monday) as my water testing kit will not arrive until wednesday....

1 out of 9 of the platty's has 3 tiny fadded white spots on his tail (not pure white) so it could be ich or it could be just part of the fish...maybe i could do a 100% water change? and see if it stops as i dont want to kill them with meds (i rasied them from fry)

Thanx for all the help!

A 100% water is very stressful for fish. The swings in pH, tempature, and other things will do more harm than good. Small frequent changes are much better.

Whats all in the tank?
I would raise the temp to 80(26c) and add 1 rounded tablespoon per 5 gals of Aquarium salt. This is all I have ever used.

IMO the last comment was great. If you don't have scaleless fish, invertibrates, snails, or live plants....you're good to go with the aquarium salt....just make sure its either kosher salt or aquarium salt.

Also....some fish do better than others on large water changes. For some discus keepers 100% water changes every other day used to be the norm for wild caught discus.....with good results.

When I had goldfish and made a really large water change....they instantly started breeding.

But I've never seen a livebearer that loved a 20% water change...and I'd never attempt a large one with these particular fish. Just my observations. :)

it maybe best to do a 30 percent water change and get some anti white spot and treat them ,, if they are rubbing the bodys on the bottom of the tank or on any stones they may be suffering from this . you need to sort this problem out sooner than later as they could get worse .

if you have white spot get some protozin from your lfs and follow the treatment through, don't forget to take the activated carbon out of your filter for the course of the treatmnet and then put back the same carbon, for a couple of days, then discard it. i had it a few weeks back and my platies survived :) although my clown loach did not :-(
best of luck
