Hi there,
I live in a house with a cellar
the lounge flooring in floor boards with new carpet.
i have sucked all the fish water i can out of the carpet but it is starting to smell like cat pee
either the tennant before me had cats and the floor boards were treated before new carpet was laid
OR tropical fish water has same chemicals/properties as cat pee.

How can i eliminate the smell?
has this happened to anybody else?
please can someone advise

hoping in anticipation

Hey, dont know if this is much help but here it goes, we had a leak after someone left our tap on for half an hour it leaked through to downstairs in are living room and drenched the floor we left it a few days but the smell got worse. We rang somebbody and they took up the carpet and the underneath concrete was absolutely drenched so for a month now we've had a dehumidifer in their then tuesday there coming back to give us our new carpet. we really didnt think it was that wet until we took uo the carpet. So if yours appears to be as ours was then id get on the phone and see what they say. Im afraid the smell may never be gone unless you ring someone like your insurance and see what they can do. In the meantime try a scented candle?.

I've had the experience with soaked fishroom towels after one of my usual water incidents. If you get busy afterward & forget about the tank water soaked towels, after a couple of days they smell nasty. Rinsing with plain chlorinated tap water gets rid of it, as I'm guessing it is a bacterial growth issue.

This being the case, a carpet shampooer, with a bit of bleach added to the cleaning solution will probably do the trick. Yes, you are adding water to remove water, but in the process removing and neutralizing bacteria. You can rent these at a variety of places, DIY & hardware stores, some larger food stores.

Don't go too heavy with the bleach, an ounce or two per gallon should be plenty, you don't want to bleach out the carpeting, just boost the disinfectant level.

failing that - enzyme cleaner works pretty well at getting out smells, although it is rather expensive.
