I'm starting a 10 gallon planted tank, and will be eventually adding bettas. My question is how many bettas and what sexes could I get? I was also thinking about adding a dwarf frog or two. Does this sound alright?

A single Betta male would be perfect. As for other species, that would depend on the dimensions of the aquarium. I can't help you with the frogs, I am sure someone else will be able to.

A quick search would have shown you that males are not compatible with each other, nor with females, while females are usually only compatible with each other in groups of 5+ and only in larger aquarium. :good: Betta compatibility also very much depends on the temperament of the individual Bettas.

I have 7 harlequin rasboras in with my little betta boy. They do really well together. I was also told pygmy cories are good as well.

+1 for the single male betta. A small shoal of pygmy's may go great with him - though I'd watch out as some bettas are more agressive than others, and could potentially kill them. Some shrimp would maybe finish off this setup, maybe some ghosts or amanos would be best as cherries are pretty small and may be considered easier snacks than the larger ghosts/amanos.

Good Luck with the new tank - bettas are truly ace fish :)

As for the dwarf frogs, they do have potential. Two would really be your max. They would need careful feeding (preferably with live foods such as bloodworms), possibly with tweezers as they have pretty poor eyesight, and the betta would simply gobble their food before they got anywhere near it. However, I'd rather keep the cories personally ;)

Thanks, I actually currently have a 29 gallon with 8 harlequins and 6 cories. So, I'm looking for a little variety. Thats why I was considering the frogs. I did know that males didn't mix well, but wasn't sure about a male and female or multiple females.

You would probably be ok with a pair of Betta simplex, but B. splendens are renowned for being aggressive.

You could have female guppies or male endlers, harlequin rasboras, shrimps, and snails are just some aquatic live animals that would work out with a single male Betta,
Just one note when you stock it make sure the Betta goes in the tank last

Guppies aren't really compatible with bettas as both of them have long finnage. The chances of them nipping each others fins is very high.

A non fancy female would go with a Betta the fancy types won't work though with a Betta though. My lfs sells feeder guppies and the females have almost no color so I got one and they are definitely compatible but maybe it is just the personality of my Betta.
This is a good example of a compatible guppy that should work well with a Betta here is a pic of the female guppy

She's pretty :) Yeah I had some guppies with a Betta (before I knew better) and those guppies were evil. Not just to the betta, but to all the fish in the community. The betta lived happily with my swords and platys, but when I got the guppies, the whole tank with the hades in a handbasket. All the fish were hiding from those little psychos! I took the guppies back to the LFS. They were satan reincarnated. Maybe I just had a bad batch, but I will probably never get guppies again. Unless its a species tank of nothing but guppies.

So I guess I am leary on the idea based on my bad experience. But that is great that yours are doing well. And that little female is very pretty despite being plain :) Is she preggo? She's is pretty dark around the back of her belly.

Yeah I think she is pregnant 3 days after I bought her she had babies so I think that she would drop again soon
My bumblebee platy is preggo again. I save some of her babies from the last drop. They are orange like daddy but have her black spots. One of the fry is almost all black!

Awesome, that is so cool. I left mine in the tank because there are so many plants in there and so far the fry are doing fine

I have the fry temporarily in the breeder net. I actually rescued them from the tank. I was trying to catch some of the older juvies because I found them a home. Yeah, I unintentionally started a breeding business, but I give up the babies for free provided the taker can prove the quality of the home they are going to. I had to crack down on that as someone wanted to rehome my clown loach to a tank smaller than mine. But I did rehome the loach to a 200g with 6 other clown loaches :)
