In the summer i plan to breed the bettas. Right now i have a 30 gallon inhabited by guppies and 2 large goldfish. The problem is my dad probably will not let me raise bettas in there. So, can i use the 10 gallon in which the pair will spawn in? I plan to cull the frys... :/ and then jarring the rest when they're old enough.

Surely if you don't have enough room for all the fry you shouldn't breed them? I mean, its horrible to kill perfectly good bettas just because you didn't have enough room.

Culling fries would be a bit too early. You might be culling your best samples. I think culling is probably best done at jarring time. At this point the Betta's are 2.5 month old and you have a fair idea of what they will look like.

Culling the frys because of space? Better don't breed it darling until you got space. ;) Be responsible. If the deformation babies, yes, you can culling them. :D

Have been looking at spawn logs to figure out how much equipment will be needed:

Here are some examples:

Double Black near HM male x Double Black (HM) female, sibling spawn #090504. These outstanding breeders were raised by Jim Sonnier.

Offspring from spawn #090504 should be 100% Double Blacks (genetically pure melano and genetically pure black lace both together in the same fish!) with some Half Moon finnage. This near Half Moon male has great Black color and triple ray branching (8 branches). This sibling female is also a Double Black, and has double ray branching (4 branches). Youngsters should be available for sale around January 15 29, 2005.

09.05.2004 : Looks like a small clutch of eggs (the female was small).

09.07.2004 : Looks like about 150 fry hatched out. A momentous occasion for me! My first living offspring from the spawning of a melano female!

10.07.2004 : The fry are growing well and looking good!

11.13.2004 : Jarred up 6 fry. Many of them are showing Red wash at this time, but the Red should soon disappear as they should be carrying the Red-loss gene.

11.15.2004 : Jarred up 6 more fry. SOLD OUT!

Long-finned Half-Giant Green Marble male x Pastel Green near HM female, spawn #092204. These outstanding breeders were raised by Jim Sonnier.

Offspring from spawn #092204 should be 100% long-finned with some Half Moon finnage, and 50% of all the offspring should be carrying the Plakat (short-fin) gene. 50% of the offspring should be dark-bodied and 50% should be Cambodian. There should be some Green Marbles and some Pastel Greens, and 50% of all the offspring should be Half-Giants. This male from my spawn #021704 is very large and hopefully inherited some maternal Half Moon genes. This female from my spawn #011604 has excellent finnage with double ray branching (4 branches) and she should pass on Half Moon characteristics inherited from both of her outstanding parents. Youngsters should be available for sale around January 29 February 5, 2005.

09.22.2004 : Looks like a small clutch of eggs.

09.24.2004 : Looks like about 75 fry hatched out. The 50-50 split between dark-body and Cambodian is already apparent.

11.21.2004 : Jarred up 6 of the largest fry.

12.04.2004 : Jarred up 6 more fry.

12.26.2004 : Jarred up 6 more fry.

01.17.2004 : Jarred up 6 more fry.

Best of Show (First Coast Bettas - Fall 2004) Green Marble HM male x 1st place (First Coast Bettas - Fall 2004) Blue (HM) female, spawn #102504. These outstanding breeders were raised by Ernie Perez and Wayne McLain.

Offspring from spawn #102504 should be split between Blue Marbles and Green Marbles with lots of Half Moon finnage. These were two of the best fish at the First Coast Bettas Fall show 2004. This Half Moon male won Best of Show and has great marble coloration with triple ray branching (8 caudal branches). This 1st place female has excellent color and finnage with double ray branching (4 branches). I am looking for some outstanding Marble offspring from these parents. Youngsters should be available for sale around March 1, 2005.

10.25.2004 : Looks like a medium sized clutch of eggs.

10.27.2004 : Looks like about 250 fry hatched out.

11.06.2004 : The fry are growing well and looking good!

01.08.2005 : Jarred up 6 of the largest fry.

01.18.2005 : Jarred up 3 more fry.

01.22.2005 : Jarred up 6 more fry.

01.29.2005 : Jarred up 5 more fry.

02.03.2005 : Jarred up 4 more fry.

02.10.2005 : Jarred up 4 more fry.

Looks like you need to prepare for the having the growout tank occupied for 2.5-3.5 months.

Alright, I'll try and get dad to lend me his 30 gallon (L: 30, H: 21 W: 12 --> inches) for the growout tank. If not, then i'll use the garage to shelve the jars on until the frys are at least 2 months. BTW, walmart sells: 10 gallon with hood, bio wheel filtration, decorations, stress coat, net, gravel, everything you need to set up a tank for only 29.99! USD i meant.
