Due to some unexpected tank restructuring, I have an empty 10 gallon (well, it has a handful of snails :p ).

I've been thinking of several different things to do with it, but my latest idea would be a 10g betta community tank (NO, not a community of bettas ;) )

How about this:
1 male betta
4 panda or dwarf cories
3-4 ottos

Anything else? Maybe 5-6 harlequin rasboras? Or would that be pushing it?

The snails can go in my bigger tank and will, if I get the otocinclus cats.

I'd go with either the corys or the otos not both and yes adding any more fish would be pushing it IMO.

If you wanted to you could boost the number of ottos and cories. The ottos take up less mass then just about any other fish I could imagine and so adding more of them won't affect the bioload very much. It would be more interesting to look at with a larger shoal of cories (in my opinion) Seeing a group of them lying together is an interesting sight.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Yeah, I LOVE my cories! I could move my pandas from my big tank and get them a couple of friends.

So, anything other than just cories and bettas would be pushing it? Even with only 4 panda cories?

Yes, I'm specifically mentioning pandas b/c I know they stay smaller than the other cories.

Well this kinda follows in the same idea...i have a 5 gallon tank that my mom would like to put in her office at work. She wants to have a male betta in it, but she also wants some other kind of fish. Any suggestions? like i said its only a 5er so i don't really have many choices, so help me out :)

You could add 3 panda cories or 3-4 otocinclus catfish. Most of the other fish that are small like neons or harlequin rasboras ARE small, but need more swimming room than a 5g tank.

alright awesome! would 3 panda cories be good or do you suggest a couple more or what? The guy at the lps suggested zebra danios, but i know that they need to be in a school so i decided to come on here and ask :)

The main problem with adding other non-bottom dwelling fish is that most of the smaller top swimming community fish like to nip at long fins. Nippers like most tetras and barbs are notorious for destroying the fins of bettas. Some neons might work but they are lousy cyclers and don't school very well unless there are a large number of them.

You could maybe do 4 pandas but I wouldn't do more than that. Zebra danios are nice, small fish, but really need more swimming room than a 5g would allow. The fish would fit but it's not the optimal living condition for them. Plus, they can be a bit nippy and may go after the bettas fins.

yeah thats another thing i was worried about...the nippyness, because i already noticed my zebra danios nipping at the guppies when they were in the 5er. Can't imagine havin them with a betta...poor thing wouldn't have any fins!

Hi parker313 :)

I think your plan sounds great. Pandas are small and so are ottos, so you wouldn't be overstocking.

Why not keep your pandas where they are and treat yourself to a few of a different kind of cory. Any kind of cory is a good choice since there are no bad corys!

That's why I was thinking of the rasboras. Much shier than barbs or tetras.

I have some neons in my big tank. Also, this tank is already completely cycled so I don't have to worry about fish that could survive cycling.

I was specifically thinking of the pandas b/c they are smaller but in reality, I could use the 10g as a "grow out" for cories of some other sort and then move them to the big tank if they get too big.

The lfs said a few weeks back they were going to be doing a big cory order soon b/c so many people are asking for them. Maybe I'll luck into some sterbai
