Hi,

It's been one year since i set my tank up. Swordtails and guppies have been pregnant many times but still no fry so i guess they got eaten.

Thing is, i heavily planted the tank and have rocks and wood and hiding places so i am suprised at my failure to see any fry still.

I am not interested in going down the seperate breeding tank, breednig net/trap ect route. I want to see natural livebearer birth in the main tank environment to see if nature can find a way.

So my question is - could it be cos they are aborting - i.e. - they are surving and not thriving due to imperfect diet, light etc ?

You and me both!
I think Guppies are incredibly sensitive and abort quite easily.

My mollies have been breeding like rabbits, as have my ancistrus, but for the life if me I can't get my guppies to do it.

I've given up being hopeful, and hopefully it'll happen when I least expect it.

:dunno:

but ive got ancistrus and swordtails and they havnt dropped any sprogs either !!!!!

oh and before someone says - youve only got 1 male ancistrus by looking at my info below - used to have a female that dies - maybe he went into faithful morning. lol

Could be your barbs eating them. My neons follow the females round and gobble any fry coming out :grr:

I'm surprised that you haven't had any fry at all live. In my largest tank I barely had any plants in there for the first few weeks but one of my guppies had fry and 3 of them survived with 9 guppies and 5 neons in there.

I don't know why you don't have fry but good luck for some in the future :)

Did you buy any good books? :p

at last - thanks for making an effort to reply.

think your right about my barbs. they eat anything that moves and they are flipping fast!

no books just trial and error

When i purchased my livebearers to start my new tank that was going to be used for breeding and i wanted to watch the natural process at first as well ( i know use nets/traps....sorry if this offends you) I was stocking up and i wanted some variety so i asked if i could put barbs in...and the guy told me that it is not a wise choice because the babs will take away from the "natural" appraoch because the babies will not have a chance.

I think it is the barbs....sorry for your luck :(
