If you offer the Dwarf puffers only the largest snails, the puffers will not attempt to crush the shells and will suck the flesh out of the shell instead.

I've never given my dwarves very tiny pond snails, so they make the best out of the slightly large ones I give them. They wait next to the doomed snail until it pokes it's body out, then, well, you can imagine

I think that they could use this strategy with MTS (although they would need to figure out how to avoid the trap door they have) although I've never tried yet
