im gutted, i mean really gutted!!
i had to leave the house as my water tank(not fish tank) burst and the celing fell down, so had to take the children to stay at there dads, got home last night to find, the heater off, and the filter,(PLUMBERS??)
i turned them back on immediatley, but thing is i havent been able to get home to change the water for 3 days and ammonia was0.5 before i left,
i will do a 30% this morning( have run out of bloody conditiuoner- was my intention to go to lfs the day the tank broke,
anyone got any other sugestions,as the tank has beautiful fish in there and i would prob give it all up if i lost anymore (THIS ONE WAS MY FAULT )

EDIT** HAVE ALSO LOST 1 NEON TETRA, FOUND HIM IN THE ROCK TOY, and LFS DONT OPEN TILL 10.30

Just do small to medium sized daily water changes, Stress Coat dechlorinator can help reduce the fishes stress, depending on the fish you have in the tank marine/pure salt may also be good to use as it can help reduce the toxicity of toxins like nitrites. How many fish do you have in the tank and what types are they plus how many gallons is the tank? Do you know anyone else with an established community fish tank that lives near you?

thanks tokis
there are quite a few in there at the moment
2 kissing gouramis
2 opulaine gouramis
7 wags
3 neons
2 madagascan rainbows
4 bettas
i put them all in when i thort my 4ft tank was broken turned out is was the filter spraying out,
so in effect they have been thru 2 cycles. not fair
feel really bad about this,
was going to change the gravel to sand in the 4ft and put them back but i dont think that would be a good idea...

sorry its fresh by the way, but then u prob guessed that

and its 98 litres

NOW HAS MY 6 INCH SILVER SHARK IN TOO

Ah no salt then because of the neons, but the Stress Coat dechlorinator should still be able to help a bit. Do you know of anyone near you on your area who has an established fish tank? If you do, you could see if you could transfer some of the gunk from their established filter sponges into your filter sponges, hopefully it'll transfer some of the beneficial bacteria with it and so help re-establish your own tank  .

unfortunatley i dont know anyone as i havent lived here long,
i will get the stress coat declorinator this morning, and do the water change as soon as i do get it (ABOUT 10,30)
fingers crossed this will be ok and i will test the water a bit later and get back if i have any probs,
thanks tokis, u been fab xxx

did the water change and added the stress coater declorinator, all seems ok now ammonia is 0, so will do again in the morning BUT
i took the oppotunity to change the gravel in the 4ft tank, all was fine, topped up the water with kettle water so i could get the fish (1 silver shark and 1 siamese ff and 2 guppies) back in,, and when i did it was a rush as the kids were due thru the door any minute, anyway i had had the fish in a bucket and added some stress thingy to it,(and to the frsh tank) but when i put the shark back in he went ""dead"" within seconds, then i realised that in the rush that i hadnt checked the temp!! it was freezing way down to under 40`f, i had no idea what to do so just for a change i stopped and thort and thought " well if he dies, it will happen if i leave him or move him" so i scooped him up with the net and placed him in the top of the warm tank, holding the net and stroking his tail for about 10mins, hes now swimming round happy as larry!! what on earth happend to him??
also as you can see from the list above there are too many fish in this tank now, and this guy is about 6 inches long, so can i move him back when the temp has risen??
the siamese ff and the guppies are absolutley fine in there tho heater is on but we all know they go at a slow rate,
what a day this has been, i thought fish keeping was a relaxing hobby ... lol

I MUST ALSO ADD THAT THE SILVER SHARK JUMPED CLEAN OUT OF THE BUCKET WHEN I WAS SWAPPING THE GRAVEL, FOUND HIM WRIGGLING ABOUT ON THE LAMINATE FLOOR, THIS BOY IS BEYOND BELIEF
AND HAS REALLY FOUND HIS WAY TO MY HEART TODAY

He went into shock from the low temperature, thats why he stopped moving.

Its very touching that you were stroking his tail for about 10 minutes but for future reference that is not a good idea since fish have a slime coat that protects them and touching them rubs this off and could cause a bacterial infection to set in. That on top of everything else that happened to him, I would watch him extremely closely for a while for any signs of disease.

Yeah i agree with TammyLiz. Sounds like a very tough shark though, a real surviver :good: , hows everything going right now with the fish?

Since your tank is cycling, IMHO your main best options for your situation are;

a. See if you can find anyone (even perhaps a pet shop) that can lend your some established filter media or look after a few of your fish in their established tank/s (of course though only if their fish stocking is compatible with your fish and they have the space in their tank/s to look after a few extra fish etc).

b. Upgrade to a larger tank- although this may not be an immediate concern right now, if you upgraded to a large tank then you'd have more gallons to go around for your fish, meaning that the water quality conditions won't fluctuate as badly as in your current tank because toxins like ammonia will be dispersed amongst a greater quantity of gallons etc. Depending on the exact dimensions of your current tank, you may need to upgrade your current tank for your growing silver/bala shark in the future either way. Or,

c. Just continue with the regular water changes and water quality testing and stuff for now to help prevent the water quality conditions getting too bad.

 .

just at the moment everything is going wrong, nitrite went really high in the above tank, with a filter i thort was cycled ( all tests led me to believe this) so i have lost quite a few fish, tho i had help thru the whole emergency, from a very kind person ( wilder) i am doing everything that i have been told to do,and by this time tommorow the tank will hopefully be showing good results

also found out the shark now has septicemia,( maybe from stroking his taill!!!!!!) yes i do feel really ever so bad

if i have learned anything from all this its that i will never ever ever put a fish into a tank without being 110% postive thats its completley cycled, feels totally crapp to know what i have put the fish thru, and even tho totally unitentionally, will always do fishless cycling from here on in,

anyone with a heart or little or no experience will do the same
