I will be setting up my new tank today and have now defantly decided to use sand after the poll results have come back. Thanks to everyone who voted and made very useful comments!!.

Will I need to make the depth of the sand even across the whole tank or do I need to put more sand at the back making a gradual decline the nearer to the front of the tank?(So it looks like a hill, I hope this make sense.)
I have learnt that the maximum depth of the sand must be no more than 1 inch.

When I used to use gravel I always used to make the back higher and the front lower, this is the reason I am asking this question. :S

BTW, the tank I have is a Juwel Trigon 950 (L: 98.5cm x W:70cm x H:60cm) for reference.

Hey and have fun setting up your tank!
I think you can actually go up to 2'' deep with the sand. Its up to you whether you want to slope it from front to back. I read that it gives the tank a more dimensional feel but i've got mine pretty much evenly spread around my tank. Have Fun!
Edit: Make sure you give the sand a stir every now and again!

When i put my sand in, it all looked perfect, but 4 weeks later, after a few water changes, it looks like what i can only describe as, under the sea lol, there are bumps, and waves here there and everywhere, but it looks nice, and more natural..... :)

Thanks for the replys, I will probably make the back slightly higher by 1/2 inch or so.

I have tried doing that in my 20 dan 5 gallon tanks (the two with sand)

after a few days, the bottom feeders and have it the way they want it.

mine has actually devloped that my sand slopes from about 1/2 inch from the left to 2 inches on the right. I kept raking it back, but have given up now. I guess its the flow of the water thats done that.

1 inch is fine, but if you have plants you may need it deeper (2 inches). Especially for plants with deep roots...swords, vallis.

As Siamese Fighter says, give the sand a stir or a prod now and then to release any build up of gas bubbles.
