do i remove and split

Hi    Sorry  if this is a dumb  question but  , im a bit confused about live plants . I bought some  potted aquauriam  plants  but have seen some  u tube  video suggesting you should remove pot and split plant up before placing in the sand .  Is this correct ? There were open plants in shop but...
