I use pool filter sand. Mine is a light tan color with some variagated grains in it... a little black and brown and white grains. It didn't need any cleaning, plus it's heavy enough to gravel vac! It maybe slightly courser than some people like, but I prefer it since I find play sand too...

A good LFS should be able to make you a glass lid or order you a lid with the dimensions you need. Then you can just place whatever lighting you choose ontop of the glass.

I don't want to rush you into stocking your tank too much, too soon. Just sharing with you my recent experience. Hopefully, these guys just need some "settling in" time, but if not, when you add more fish later that might help calm them.
