Unless you're intending going head first to a large ie. 6ft+ tank then please don't go buying Oscars. Think about tank size you want to get then research what fish will fit into it. :)

Been thinking about this response and have to say I disagree with it almost totally. I can see there would be reason to say to newcomers that the info on the other site might not be wholly accurate so always check first but I've used it quite often in the past and found it to be a very useful...

yes they will eat any uneaten food. just a warning though, they do breed as well. i had 5 and ended up with a couple of dozen. as far as i know, none of them ate each other.

Guys, I used to visit a website a year or so back which you put in details of your tank size, filter model and fish stock and it calculated whether the tank was overstocked and whether your fish are compatible etc. Now I can't remember the name of the site and wondered if anyone here would know...

Just a thought but is there no other fishkeeper or LFS nearby who can give you some used filter media?

hi all just tuned in though not new to hobby. kept fish for few years but went to Thailand for a year so had to give them up. Back now in Scotland and have my new lot of inmates swimming merrily. was a member of another forum which appears to have disappeared so here we are. thats it then HELLO!
