    Ambient light = algae?

I put a blackout curtain on the window behind my tank and it really helped reduce algae growth. You can also use a matte finish thin plastic material on the back of the tank, which has the benefit of making the fish more visible.

    Lights and plants

If you get too much algae, reduce the blue light as much as possible. The plants will be fine.

Is it worth emptying a tank to get rid of snails?

That’s what I thought at first, but my tank was heavily planted, and no matter how many baby snails I took out (some days it was 30+) it didn’t make a difference. The mature snails of that kind were only about 1/4” long, and the babies were very tiny. It was a 32.5 gallon Fluval tank, and some...

Is it worth emptying a tank to get rid of snails?

My 32.5 gallon tank had a huge infestation of small bladderwort snails. Taking them out, using lettuce, snail traps, or reducing food didn’t work. As many have recommended, get some assassin snails. It took six about a month to completely eliminate them. They didn’t bother my nerite or mystery...

Humane Way to Get Rid of Pest Snails???

In my case the invasive snails were so small (3/8”max, and most much smaller as they would appear as babies) that shells weren’t a problem. I never noticed them when vacuuming during water changes. Some were in the filter section of my tank with the sponge, and the first assassin snail went...

can't keep neocaridinas alive [spoiler: no survivors]

Get a TDS meter if you don’t already have one. Shrimp thrive in my tank, and TDS is usually around 180/200, but 150-300 is fine. I use a product called Saltyshrimp, I got through Amazon. You can add it to your water for changes to get a TDS around 150 or so. It’s said to give better results then...

    Plants to Outcompete Algae

What is your light source? Algae can be easily controlled with a lamp that allows you to adjust white, blue, green and red light levels. Keeping the blue light very low was the key for my tank. No diatoms at all, and I never have to clean the glass from green algae, as a couple of nerite snails...

Humane Way to Get Rid of Pest Snails???

My tank had a huge infestation of small bladderwort snails. Scooping them out (sometimes 20-30 a day) or squishing them (which I didn’t like doing) didn’t work. There are lots of cherry shrimp, and a couple of nerite snails so chemical treatment wasn’t an option. I added 6 assassin snails and...

    Gravel for shrimp

I have a heavily planted tank with a mix of regular gravel plus a black kind that’s good for plant growth. There are lots of cherry shrimp having plenty of babies, plus a few amano shrimp, a big mystery snail, a couple of nerite snails, and some assassin snails. Prior to adding six assassin...

    Advice on selling aquarium

I started an aquarium during the pandemic, and it’s been a source of enjoyment, but I’m going to start traveling again and need to sell it. It’s a 32.5 gallon Fluval freshwater tank with upgraded pump and heater, stocked primarily with cherry shrimp (lots of them), a few pygmy cory cats, and...

    BBA problem

There’s more to controlling algae than white or rgb light. My 32.5 gallon Fluval tank came with their Aquasky LED light. It has plenty of plants, and I had an excessive growth of algae until finding advice on line about how to create a custom light profile for a heavily planted tank. Algae...

    HELP I NEVER BOUGHT SNAILS

I had bladder snails come in with plants. I pick out the bigger ones (they are still less than 3/16”) and crush the smaller ones (about the size of a mustard seed against the glass, up to 20-30/day. It’s not at all enjoyable. They are also in the sponge filter compartments, and I think that’s...
