The pic on ethe right almost looks like a parrot fish which  see a lot in mexico.

Just stick with guppies or goldfish. Something simple that still looks nice in a very small aquarium.

Quit while you are ahead, just start over and make sure to get all the right stuff and sanitize everything thourghly.

If this is your first tank I would recomend and structure and 3 or 4 decent fake plants. It depend on what fish for wha setup exactly so if you say what you are looking for I could help you more.

Me and my friends have had great luck with breeding them and getting them up to size just from normal flakes.

Snails are fine to be in tanks as long as you can be sure they did ok at your lfs. Depending on what fish are in the tank they can eat the snails. I know for sure Yoyo loaches can do this.
