My betta is in a 5g too and is perfectly happy, has plenty of room. If you put him back in with the tetras he will just get nipped again and might end up with fin rot/infection (so would be a waste of time letting him heal).

I might buy some small plastic tanks, they dont cost much. Hopfully they will be like my guppies and mainly produce female fry (though males are probably easier to sell?).

I have 4 tanks (female is in one with a couple corys, male is on his own, a tank with fry in it and my comunity tank) at the moment i am over run with guppy fry so no room for betta fry, i might have to get a couple more tanks, just worried that i will end up with males and need even more tanks...

You could be right, they had been hastling her for a while and her tail had been nipped, i think i may have to reduce my males as i have too many in the tank, either that or i up my females but i will then end up with far too many fry.

Thank you, most of the fry born so far have been conceved at the pet shop (not from my males) so hopfully when they breed with my males i will start getting more male fry (and the colours i want), i have several males and 6 females so at some point i should get some males.

If you have other fish in the tank i would treat it anyway, if it is ich it can live in the filter for a while and infect the other fish. I think sometimes these things just happen (sometimes due to water quality, temprature change or infection from other fish).

Poor fishy. Not sure if it was ich, my molly had it a few weeks ago but it did not spread that fast, i treated the whole tank and my molly recovered. Did you cycle your tank before adding the fish? It could just be that she was infected when you bought her, if she came from a pet store then...
