i'll never understand why some people claim that gouramis do better in pairs. i only have experience with dwarf gouramis but i have found that they do much better singly. my understanding is that all gouramis are territorial and will be aggressive towards their own species (or similar species...

hmm.. could i have a blue acara, a convict, and a firemouth in a 55 gallon? and if i did decide on three cichlids, could i add any smaller schooling fish or scavengers or would the cichlids tear them apart? thanks for the help

ive never had a cichlid tank before so i dont really know what im doing. i know 55 gallons isnt the ideal size for a community so i'm trying to get ideas for stockin. i dont want anything too rare or expensive... i like the common cichlids like convicts, jack dempseys, firemouths, and acaras...

i hear they need a vertical tank and mine is only 12 inches high.. can it be done?

honestly, i dont know why some people suggest keeping dwarf gouramis in pairs. theyre already prone to illness as it is. if you have two males in a tank it'll increase stress without a doubt. in my experience one male will dominate the other... and even the dominating male will have more...

overrated : silverdollars- skittish, extremely dull, and can be aggressive in a community tank. goldfish- tons of waste and very boring. bettas- i love em but they're too incompatible with other fish.

are their any small species of turtle that can be put in a community tank? i would increase filtration and provide some sort of land area for the turtle to hang out on.

the suggested "community tank combinations" had me thinkin that i might be reading the wrong book. its old as hell but i thought it could still have accurate information. maybe not? "5 gallon tank: 17 mixed-sized fishes 6 bloodfins 2 medakas 1 paradise fish 1 corydoras 2 platy variatus 3...

I have one traditional male dwarf gourami in my community tank. He is the biggest fish in the tank and is becoming very cocky. All I read about these guys is how peaceful they are towards other species but mine is constantly nipping my tetras, corys, and shrimp. Can anything be done to better...

i think you should expand your options. i dont know much but i hear convicts can be vicious, oscars get huuge, and piranhas school and therefore need giant tanks.

I'd have to disagree. of course, a larger tank is ideal but i see no problem in keeping a single betta in a 2 and a half gallon bowl if it has regular water changes and what not... especially if you throw a couple low maintenance plants in there to entertain him a little bit. The way I see it...
