Outlet is near the surface - there is a lot of water agitation there.  But I don't have an airpump running in the tank.

Thanks for the replies guys!   So it looks like it will have to go back, the plant still smells - and you are right it's not worth taking the chance.       I have a 60L tank with 10 neon tetras, a bristlenose pleco and a few cherry shrimp. :)
