  Hi Essjay, yes we live in the Uk, North Downs county Kent hence the chalk. Indeed the kettle needs renewing most years ShinySideUp and descaling on a weekly basis. Strangely I also have clown loaches and they thrive in our water for some reason. Thanks for the information, will come back...

The water is pumped from the bottom of the tank and exits via a spray bar over the trickle filter. I think it is similar to the Aqua One tanks? Will try to find a link thanks.

Used an automatic feeder once whilst on holiday. It overfed my fish and killed the lot so I've never used it since. Fish can go two weeks without food, so a good water change before holiday and no food is my answer
