Been doing water changes every now and then to keep the ammonia down.  Seems like the ammonia's stabilised at 0-0.25ppm.  Can I take this as a sign that the bacteria's starting to kick in?

Thankyou for the replies.  I'm using the NH3/NH4 drop test kits produced by API.  I have two filters in the tank at the moment, an established one that I got from an aunt and a non-established filter.   If the kit also registers ammonium, how do you recommend I proceed with regards to monitoring...

You were right, 0.5ppm.  Sydney water uses chloramines, not very fish friendly.  Rainwater also contaminated with ammonia.  Is it time to move to the UK?

Tested the water this morning.  0.5ppm ammonia, did a 30% change followed by a 50% change a few hours later and retested.  Still hovering between 0.25-0.5ppm.  Am I doing it wrong?

Done.  Now to obsessively monitor ammonia and nitrate levels.  Are there any other things I should keep a look out for? Thanks for all the advice so far. 

He's getting stronger now and eating a bit more.  Another user pointed out that I should be doing water changes of around 90% every day in an uncycled tank which most likely explains why he got sick in the first place.

I always thought you had to wait the full 7-9 weeks even for a seeded tank.  An insta-cycled tank sounds too good to be true!
