    Fin Rot

Thankyou for the reply, the kink was like this picture.   He'd shown the same kink when he was suffering from ammonia poisoning, however this time, he wasn't able to recover.  I buried him this morning.   Although I hope that it won't be so, what should I do in the future if I encounter...

    Fin Rot

Tank size: 20L Temp: 23 oC Ammonia: 0-0.25 ppm (I use seachem prime which may give a slightly higher ammonia count) pH: 7.6+ Medicine: Cephalexin 500g Problems: Fin rot, turned on side     My bubble eye goldfish has severe fin rot, which started because his tank mate had been nibbling on his...

    Ammonia In The Tap Water

Thanks Byron and everyone for your help so far  Sorry to bother you guys again, but I've got another question.  I've noticed that for the past 2 days, that he has gotten a little bit 'fatter' and the scales on his left side are slightly raised.  I've read that these are symptoms for dropsy...

    Ammonia In The Tap Water

Been doing water changes every now and then to keep the ammonia down.  Seems like the ammonia's stabilised at 0-0.25ppm.  Can I take this as a sign that the bacteria's starting to kick in?

    Ammonia In The Tap Water

Thankyou for the replies.  I'm using the NH3/NH4 drop test kits produced by API.  I have two filters in the tank at the moment, an established one that I got from an aunt and a non-established filter.   If the kit also registers ammonium, how do you recommend I proceed with regards to monitoring...

    Ammonia In The Tap Water

Hello all! I'm new to fish keeping and I have a query about water quality.   My current set up involves a 100L tank containing 1 bubble-eye goldfish and a small pond containing 5 goldfish (a mix of orlandas and regular goldfish).  I've had some trouble recently with ammonia poisoning with my...

Another Newb With A Fish In An Uncycled Tank

The lab at uni has some, but I doubt I could get past security with it   I'll ask about it in the beginner's section. Thankyou for all the advice so far everyone, you've all been so helpful and reassuring.

You were right, 0.5ppm.  Sydney water uses chloramines, not very fish friendly.  Rainwater also contaminated with ammonia.  Is it time to move to the UK?

Tested the water this morning.  0.5ppm ammonia, did a 30% change followed by a 50% change a few hours later and retested.  Still hovering between 0.25-0.5ppm.  Am I doing it wrong?

Done.  Now to obsessively monitor ammonia and nitrate levels.  Are there any other things I should keep a look out for? Thanks for all the advice so far.

Help! Fish Lying On It's Side.

He's getting stronger now and eating a bit more.  Another user pointed out that I should be doing water changes of around 90% every day in an uncycled tank which most likely explains why he got sick in the first place.

She gave me her entire filter. o.0 She has multiple tanks, so I guess she'll probably use medium from them to replace the one she gave me. I've popped the entire filter in a bucket with some water (20L) from my current tank.  Should I start a fishless cycle in the bucket, or should I pop it...

Help! Fish Lying On It's Side.

Did two 10% water changes since last time and added some table salt.  He's eating a bit now. Also got hold of a pH test kit and got a reading of 7.6+  Nitrate kit still a no show.

I always thought you had to wait the full 7-9 weeks even for a seeded tank.  An insta-cycled tank sounds too good to be true!

That's the one!     The lack of products sold here in Australia is truly infuriating.
