I have no jumping fish so im good on that one but the glass is kept clean but does mist up with condensation maybe ill try it half open tbh im not sure i will gain anything but it may be worth a try.

Your right it won't but it should increase the flow around the tank which is what I'm trying to do

That's how mine is now so I guess if I place my power head next to the outlet aswell this will improve the circulation further right.

my guess would say its that it could only be the fuse, ballast or bulbs.

It would be only a guess from me but you would be very unlucky for both bulbs to blow at once due to age do the unit have a ballast?
