Its all about the dose, its silly to say it should never be used when it can be used safely. A dose high enough to kill single celled organisms and low enough not to damage a fishes gills. There is always 'stuff' in a fishtank's water that is harmful to the fish, they have the ability to repair...

Thanks for replies, I got a sheet of inch kingspan but when the tank arrived they had a foam mat the right size they’d used as a packer in the van so I used that, it was maybe 15mm polystyrene that was a little more rigid then the white stuff .

It’s inches, will the expanded white polystyrene sheets that comes in 8x4 from builders merchants be suitable , I think thinnest is about 20mm or maybe 25mm

Not entirely sure what a spray bar is ? I was thinking bringing the tap water in over an airstone would help gas off what chlorine that was in the water, but as lynnzer said probably best to deal with it before it hits the tank with the carbon filters,
