It seems that all my platties and barbs are dying off (grrrrr), and I'm planning on changing the tank over to sand, so i though, why not have a go at a new type of fish.

My surrent set up is dense in the back and sides, and open in the middle for swimming.

This is my tank now... not the best pic, but you get the drift. My Webpage

any suggestions?

A gourami would be very happy in that tank! Add some floating plants and you're set

If you decide to go with gouramis, they LOVE lots of plants. (If you go through with switching your tank over to sand will you keep live plants?) Also, where gouramis come from there is not any (or many) rocks in the stream/river so if you have another tank, you could put the rock in there. But that's just me and my biotope crazyness :)

I have never had any luck with real plants. They never seem to last long. I use plant tabs to keep them fed, but a month or so is pretty much all they last. Either my fish eat them, or they seem to rot.

I would love to have a nuturalistic tank with real plants and high spot and little 'pools' of rocks and whatnot.
