Nitrite spike

I just checked my nitrite levels and they are spiking for some reason. What is the best way to bring them down? They were at 0 for a long time then today BAM..... spike. I have not done anything different in the past few weeks other than a new plant in the tank.

water changes will lower them over a period of time are we talking tank or pond here ?how many fish size of tank/pond etc a few more details please oops just saw tank and new plant ,,levels may be due to you disturbing the tank while adding the plant do a partial water change then give it a few days and check again
