Cichlasoma Salvini is a predatory cichlid from central america. They are from a group of cichlids called Guapote's that includes the more popular Jaguar cichlid. If you do some research on th e Jag much of that info can apply to the Salvini. They are one of the smaller guapotes but still need room due to aggression.

Very fast, very aggressive and capable of inflicting serious damage on even larger tankmates. Best kept in a species tank or in a central american community if the the tank is a large one (ie 75 g or over)

I agree with CA and CFC . I had a pair many years ago , the male was amazingly colorful , a beautiful fish . Mine got from 2" to 5" in about three months in my 70 gal . The book I have , Axelrods mini atlas says they can get to 15 cm , but not much about behavior. I will tell you that he made my jewel cichlids cringe , run and hide , the only fish I had that did not fear him was a green terror , they made a mess of things ,fought non stop , and I traded them both off . I never tried keeping the male and female in there own tank , which is most likely what I should have done . I remember when I bought them the guy says " are you sure you want these guys , they get mean " I soon learned that was an understatement .

i have what i believe is a female salvini in a central american community tank and it fits in well. i think that this has to do with the fact that mine is more timid than typical salvini. anyway i thought i'd give you a couple of sites so you could read about them on your own:

http://www.cichliddepot.com/american/salvini.html

http://www.cichlidfish.com/articles/article_3767.shtml

http://www.animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/...lid/salvini.php

hope this help some and let me know if you have any other questions about this fish. i am crazy about mine and think they are a great cichlid. my favorite thing is to watch them eat. they seem to stalk the pellets and then strike out at them. :sly:
