Have just finnished filling up my 6ft tank the home made overflow and sump are working fine. B) Got hold of some industrial grade Deionising resin from work 
and filled an old fluval with it, conected the hose to one end and trickled the water in took ten hours to fill but the water in the tank has Zero nitrates and phosphates etc etc
all i have to do now is make a new hood as the one i was given with it looks naff.
And wait for the tank to cycle.
