How to prune plants

What the best way to prune plants, some of mine need a little cut, i want them to still look good and be able to recover fairly quick. Where on the stem do you cut?
How close to the base do you cut?

If it's a leaf on a sword, i cut as close to the base as i can.

If it's a stem plant, i try to cut above the little sections and not below it on in the middle of a segment. That way the plant looks like it ends with leave on top and not a bare stem

If it is something like jungle val i think its best to take the whole leaf off from the base, not cutting it, just gently pull it off.
What kind of plants do you have?
