can i have plants

i want to get some real plants in my 55 gallon. It has 40 watts of NO light. I just want some java fern or something my shark can swim through without him dissapearing. Also would i need a c02 system

well, this is not my section but what research I have done, you won't need a cO2 system to support a few plants. 40 watts sounds a bit low, it is my understanding that with exception to atinic bulbs you would idealy want to have power compacts like that used in marine tanks. I have been trying to find out why fresh plant keepers dont like atinics, my salt plants do quite well with them, but have not yet gotten an answer.

The CO2 won't make a difference unless you have at least 2wpg I'd think. Medium to high lighting. No use with your current setup definitely...

Thankyou, that photo was an older one. In its glory it had an additional 40 corals of all types. I recently gave it to my parents and am now down to my 15 and 10 gallon nano reefs.

In my tank I have 20 watts for 35 gal (.57 WPG - you have about .75). I have been pretty sucessful with my Amazon Sword and some Hygro Polysperma, which I cut back every month or so and re plant the clippings.
