Brown Spots?!

Hi

Newbie here just after a bit of advice. I have noticed over the past week or so brown spots starting to appear on my plants in the tank (they are not real plants they are arteficial silk ones) and also a few starting to appear on the ornamental log in the tank.

They look almost like rust marks and more and more seem to be appearing.

Does anyone know what these could be? Do I have a problem with my water?

Have only had the tank for three weeks. Any advice would be gratefully received.

I currently have three tetras (the other 3 died two appeared in filter!) and one male dwarf gouramai - lost the female at weekend. After losing the female gouramai I took a water sample to the shop and they said I had high nitrates so did a 50% waterchange at the weekend as advised.

Any help would be gratefully received

If the fish are near the filter and gasping sounds like bad water quality, i would invest in some liquid test kits of your own.
The brown spots are algae just remove the plants and wash it off.

Yea its algae, my sister had a lot of those in her tank.
