adding fish

hi my tank is almost cycled but i want to take my time choosing the fish to go in. is there a timeline where i HAVE to add fish or can i take as long as i like im very choosy and dont want to just add for the sake of it

Hi,

If you don't add fish once your tank is cycled you will have to continue adding ammonia to your tank to keep the bacteria alive until you do finally get some fish.

Once fish are in they produce the ammonia from their fishy waste etc

Bacteria can't survive without ammonia to feed off and will die off quickly without a supply.

If this happens you will then have to spend another 6 - 8 weeks cycling your tank all over again.

Once the tank is cycled, you will want to add a few fish otherwise the bacteria you have built up will die.

Other than this you can take as long as you like between times when you add fish, but leave at least two weeks each time, and don't add too many at a time.
