A Stupid Question - Lead In Aquariums

As raptorex pointed out it shouldnt be a problem in the tank unless you have low pH (would "leech" the lead out of the weights)and most commercial water conditioners bind toxins as such. Most of the plant weights Ive seen are actually lead-not some environmentally safer alternative. The real problem is what we do with the weights when we toss them. They end up in the environment (landfills, etc) and THAT is the major problem (in my opinion). Heavy metals are heavy metals and eventually will end up in our soils and watersheds.
The big reason sport fishing (in US anyway) has gone lead-free in the use and manufacture of sinkers/weights and other tackle. BAD for the environment and us as humans using those resources.
