I'd get 2, then it has some company
I think that it is horrible keeping something by itself.
Also there is more than enough space in that tank for 2 Bristlenose plecos

1 male and 2 females.

The average 4 ft tank is big enough to support maybe even two males in some cases, but I would say it is best to stick with only one.
