bogwood_fungus1_small.jpgHi I'm very new to all this (and to this site) but I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem of wispy, fungus all over the bogwood in my newly set up tank.
I am following the set up procedure to the letter and haven't even introduced the fish yet!
I have put in layers of substrate with added laterite, added some start up culture to kick start the filters, arranged the bogwood which is mopani - bought from a specialist shop planted lots of plants, installed the filter lighting and heater (juwel rio 125 tank) - all was fine until I planted the plants - this disturbed the substrate and caused a film of hard water type scum to form on the top of the water (although our water is very soft in Sheffield)

We were avoiding disturbing it anymore whilst everything settled but when the heater was switched on we noticed a layer of this wispy fungus/algae to form on the bogwood. This is exuding some type of small gas bubbles which are getting trapped under the scum layer on the top. We are intending removing the scum layer today but we don't know what to do about the bogwood (other than removing it!)

Has anyone experienced this before? Can antone identify the fungus/algae and tell me how to eradicate it without throwing away the bogwood (which cost a fortune!)

I have attaced a picture to show the problem. Thanks

I have had that on wood before it didn’t spread to the plants, I just scrubbed it off, I have read of it happening with wood on this site a few times, it didn’t spread to plants or anywhere else in the tank and stopped growing after about a month if I remember correctly. I thought it was a fungus it didn’t seem like algae. I don’t think its anything to worry about. The scum should go after a while, you could net some of it out with filter floss put flat and compact in the bottom of a net. If you do have to disturb the substrate it will settle again, if I cant see much I just run a box filter with lots of filter floss overnight and that clears it up.

I posted about this a while ago and the gist of most of the repies were dont worry about it it will go away.
A few suggested boiling wood and scrubbing, but it often comes back again, and goes away on its own.
someone said their fish loved it (pleco or cory i think).
